When power is removed from a motor, the load on the motor is reduced, causing it to turn at a faster rate. The motor acts as a generator and creates a large amount of electrical energy that flows back into the servo drive's power circuit. The brake resistor absorbs the excess electrical voltage coming into the servo drive and ensures the voltage in the servo drive is within the voltage tolerance range. The excess voltage absolved by the brake resistor is converted into thermal energy and is safely dissipated through the slits present in the resistor's housing.
