The EK1100-0000 EtherCAT coupler is a communication device produced by Beckhoff Automation for the connection of EtherCAT terminals with E-Bus communication interfaces to a higher-level network system. This device reliably transmits communication signals from the higher network to the EtherCAT terminals. The coupler contains two RJ-45 connection sockets; it is connected to the higher-level network through the upper connection interface, while the lower RJ-45 socket may be used to connect other EtherCAT devices in the same strand. The terminals connected to the EK1100-0000 EtherCAT coupler are supplied with the E-bus current that is required for optimum communication; the coupler can supply a maximum current of 2 amperes and a voltage of approximately 5 volts. If more current is required to be supplied, operators must integrate power feed terminals into the device.

There are about 65535 EtherCAT terminals in the overall system featuring the EK1100-0000, the medium required for the transmission of EtherCAT signals to the coupler is the Ethernet 100BASE-TX or the Ethernet CAT5 cables.
