The Beckhoff CX1020-0020 is an impressive Embedded PC intended for use in industrial automation and is a member of the Beckhoff CX series. It contains a 1 GHz Intel R Celeron M ULV processor that provides sufficient processing capabilities needed by the control applications. Since the processor is a single core, it provides a good source of reliability which is necessary in real time operations and automation systems.

This model is furnished with 256 MB of DDR RAM and is capable of adding 1GB, leaving room for draining applications. For storage, the CX1020-0020 is fitted with a Compact Flash slot, where 128MB (expandable) is included, thus users are able to plan their data storage usage. The CX1020-0020 has two RJ45 Ethernet ports that are capable of supporting 10/100 Mbit/s speeds and within these there is an internal switch for communication to users and devices. This embedded PC operates with almost no moving parts since it embraces passive cooling technologies, which means it is inaudible in operation, although it is also possible to order components with active cooling for more severe climate.

It has a built-in real time clock module that functions even in the absence of electric power. The system is equipped with power, LAN, TwinCAT, and flash access diagnostic LED monitoring systems, which help in system maintenance by storing information about activated statuses. The 16-bit ISA (PC/104) system bus takes care of communication with I/O devices, while the module interfaces with the I/O through power supply modules (E-bus, K-bus, or IP-Link). The system is either Windows Embedded CE 6 or Windows Embedded Standard 2009 and operates with the TwinCAT 2 PLC runtime, NC PTP runtime, and NC I runtime which makes it very flexible in terms of motion control and automation applications.
