AM8012-1C21-0000 is a high-performance servo motor. It is an AM8000 series motor from Beckhoff. These motors have a brushless design and are equipped with an electronic circuit for commutation. Motor commutation is the process of switching the current in the windings of a motor to ensure that the magnetic fields generated by the stator and rotor interact correctly to produce continuous rotational motion. Previously, carbon brushes were used for commutation. These brushes required periodic replacement and caused sparks which led to safety concerns. Electronic commutation solves both these problems, improves motor performance and reliability at the same time. High quality permanent magnets on the motor rotor allow low motor inertia, which enables fast response times and high energy efficiency.

The AM8012-1C21-0000 motor works with convection cooling. Its ambient temperature should be kept between 5 and 40 degrees Celsius. The maximum site elevation for rated output is 1000 meters. Output of the motor derates if ambient conditions exceed these thresholds. The AM8012-1C21-0000 motor has a shaft with a feather key and groove. A multi turn encoder provides speed and position feedback. A holding brake prevents unintentional shaft rotation.
