The X20DO8331 of B & R Automation is a highly reliable digital output module that makes up the X20 Series, features a total of eight digital output channels that use an output current of 2 A nominal, thus making it possible to control an 8 A load current for a variety of loads and actuators of reasonable power. The module works at 24 VDC as standard voltage level which is quite typical for many industrial applications. Another thing that should be noted while considering the X20DO8331 is rather powerful output protection means. This has thermal cutoff protection against heat to avoid damage, and current or short circuit damaging consequences. Further, it is equipped with an internal AC diode which is used to reverse voltage when driving an inductive load such as a bye radiator relay and solenoids, to counter the back EMF effect.

The module's design also considers a flexible installation location as well. This is thanks to its ability to be mounted horizontally and vertically which makes it fit in various control panels and enclosure types. This versatility is further complemented by its operating temperature range: The reliability of the module is proven to be optimum in a range of -25 degrees C to 60 degrees C if the module is installed horizontally and in - 25 degrees C to 50 degrees C if it is vertically mounted.

Based on the electrical safety and performance, the X20DO8331 isolates the channel to the bus with 500V efficacious voltage. This high level of isolation also helps to guard the module and the connected systems from interference and charges due to shock or influence from other voltage sources hence guaranteeing safety and reliability. In terms of power efficiency, the X20DO8331 is designed to minimize energy consumption. It consumes just 0.22 W from the bus and 0.9 W for external I/O.
