The 4P3040.01-490 exhibits several features that make it stand out as a compact power panel. Derived from the 4P series, the 4P3040.01-490 has a monochrome 5.7-inch LCD display with quarter-video graphics array resolution (QVGA). Screens equipped with QVGA resolution have an equivalent resolution of 320x240 pixels. Aside from its display characteristics, this power panel features 8 softkeys and 32 function keys. With its compact screen size and lightweight construction, the 4P3040.01-490 weighs only about 1.95 kilograms and measures 220 mm high, 205 mm wide, and 110.4 mm deep. Aside from the mentioned features, the 4P3040.01-490 also supports various communication interfaces, such as the RS232 and CAN. Particularly for the RS232 interface, the connector provided is a 9-pin male DSUB plug that transmits at a maximum baud rate of 115.2 kbits/s. To expand its support for other communication protocols, the 4P3040.01-490 offers six slots for screw-in modules. This power panel also supports a total of ten digital inputs and eight digital outputs at a nominal voltage of 24 volts. During continuous operation, it may draw a maximum power of 20 watts between the operating temperature range of 0 and 50 degrees Celsius.

The 4P3040.01-490 features 600 kB of FlashPROM for the system, 1.4 MB of FlashPROM for the user, and 700 kB of SRAM for the user. In terms of its peripherals, the 4P3040.01-490 has one PC card slot, six B&R 2003 screw-in modules, a real-time clock, status indicators, and additional slots for expansion modules.
