Product Description
The Ethernet network is commonly deployed on the industrial floor due to its performance, reliability, and interoperability. To fully adapt the Ethernet network to the control automation technology, Beckhoff designed and deployed the EtherCAT network which is based on the Ethernet network. The Beckhoff TwinCAT supplement, for example, turns an Ethernet interface into a PROFINET master. PROFINET can be interfaced with an EtherCAT network to provide for exchange of data with PROFINET Input Output devices. TwinCAT, on the other hand, offers a precise time frame for programs to be executed with the highest deterministic features without interference from other processor tasks.
The EL6631 is a Beckhoff PROFINET controller supplement that converts a Beckhoff PC-based control system into a PROFINET IO controller. The supplement is compatible with both PCs and Embedded PCs. To activate the controller supplement, an Ethernet card with an Intel chipset and a TwinCAT Ethernet driver, are required. The EL6631 has two ports/channels, features status LEDs for hardware diagnostics, and receives its input power via the E-bus. To be able to deliver time-sensitive functionalities, the EL6631 has a minimum real-time cycle of 1.0 milliseconds and 1 kilobyte maximum for input and output data.
The Beckhoff EL6631 supports mounting on a 35 mm rail in a housing with traction lever unlocking. This device has received CE, ATEX, and cULus approvals. When mounting and or wiring the EL6631, care should be taken to prevent damage emanating from electrostatic discharge. This can be done by avoiding touching the contacts directly, grounding the packaging, and proper termination of operation.
