The BX3100 is a part of Beckhoff's BX Bus Terminal Controller Series, which provides efficient control systems for different industrial automation applications. This controller is perfect for systems that require a large number of I/O points because it supports up to 64 bus terminals natively and up to 255 with K-bus expansion.

For fieldbus operations, the BX3100 has a substantial data handling capacity with 244 bytes of input and 244 bytes of output. By offering twice the process image size of 2048 bytes for both input and output, it increases its capacity and enables intricate and sophisticated process control features. It also offers efficient control of a vast amount of digital and analog signals, including 2,040 digital input/output and 512 analog input/output, which ensures that the controller can interface with many types of field devices. Control of data transfer is provided with the auto-detect option, the rate of handling can reach 12 Mbaud. This guarantees efficient and reliable means of communication which is essential in high-performance working environments. The serial port has been fitted with two sockets, COM1 and COM2, which handle RS232 and have an alternative for RS485, and the bus interface contains a 9-pin D-sub socket to facilitate a stronger connection.

This design features a CANopen-based sub-system bus (SSB) for the intended network integration, as well as diagnostic LEDs for the power supply and K-bus indicating easy fault detection. An FSTN display with a backlight supports 2 x 16 characters and a joystick switch for setting and troubleshooting. In addition to drawing 140mA of input current and one-quarter of the total K-bus current up to a maximum of 500mA, the BX3100 needs a 24V DC voltage source with a range of -15 to +20%.
