AX2090-BW80-1000 is an external braking resistor. It is designed for AX8000 series multi axes servo systems from Beckhoff. These servo systems are comprised of a motor and a drive. During motor braking, kinetic energy is routed to the DC link capacitor. These capacitors store energy for future use. To limit the DC link voltage, external resistors are used to dissipate excess energy as heat. Beckhoff provides internal braking resistor on its devices. However, if the energy handling capability of the internal resistor is insufficient, external resistors can be used for energy dissipation. The AX2090-BW80-1000 resistor has a resistance of 18 Ohms and its power handling capability is 1 kilowatt at 40 degrees Celsius. It is designed for use with the AX8640 power supply module. The ambient temperature during operation must be within -30 to 40 degrees Celsius.

The resistor supports extended temperature range of up to 60 degrees with derating of 4%/10K. For transportation, the ambient temperature range is -40 to 80 degrees. For storage, the ambient temperature range is -40 to 80 degrees. The permissible humidity for operation, storage and transportation is 85% (maximum). The strip-galvanized housing provides strong corrosion protection. For more extreme conditions, Beckhoff can provide consultation and suggest measures for corrosion protection. The AX2090-BW80-1000 resistor cools via natural convection. Its protection rating is IP20. The protection rating of terminals on the resistor is IP00. The permitted installation positions of the braking resistor are the vertical or horizontal positions. Terminal box on the resistor must face downwards when installed in the horizontal position. For vertical installation, 200 millimeter spacing must be provided between the resistor and any components on the floor.
